You can claim some insurance premiums as income-related or special expenses for tax purposes. Different types of insurances have different rules about the possibility of tax deduction.

Public health insurance

  • These premium payments are tax deductible.

    • If you are voluntarily insured (pay the contributions yourself), you will receive a certificate from the provider confirming the contributions paid in the previous year. The certificates are sent out from mid-January to the end of February.

    • If you are mandatorily insured (employee of a German company), you will receive a yearly salary statement at the end of the year from your employer.

Private health insurance

  • These premium payments are tax deductible. The necessary document will be added to your private health policy in your Feather account when it's ready.

Expat health insurance

  • These premium payments are tax deductible.

Dental, personal liability, travel, and dog liability insurances

  • These can be deductible, but the ability to deduct depends on your income. This is determined by the tax office.
